David Gipson

David Gipson is a freelance theatrical lighting designer with over 30 years of professional experience.

His career highlights include designing the World Premiere of the contemporary opera The Snow Dragon for Skylight Music Theatre in Milwaukee, WI, directed by Matthew Ozawa, and subsequently re-produced for Opera Siam in Bangkok, Thailand. David’s artistic work on Skylight Music Theater’s Beauty and the Beast was recognized by Footlights Performing Arts Awards as “Best Technical Design, Lighting (Professional)” in 2017.

Among his other credits are Runt of the Litter at MCC Theatre in New York City, directed by Larry Moss; Our Town for Steppenwolf’s Arts Exchange in Chicago, directed by Curt Columbus; Falling in Love with Love for the National Jewish Theater in Skokie, IL, directed by Sheldon Patinkin; and The Late Henry Moss and Thief River at the Contemporary American Theatre Festival, directed by Ed Herendeen.

In Texas, David has been a Resident Designer at Unity Theatre in Brenham for 20 years! Additionally, he has designed over two hundred productions with Stages Repertory Theatre, Main Street Theatre, Infernal Bridegroom Productions, Catastropic Theatre, The Ensemble Theatre, and Masquerade Theatre among many others.

David has designed over one hundred productions in Chicago for The Goodman Studio, Victory Gardens Theatre, Pegasus Players, Organic Theatre, Oak Park Festival, Teatro Vista and City Lit Theatre, among others. In Wisconsin, he designed All About Life for Wild Space Dance Company, The Good Father, Doubt and Fallen Angels for Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Transformations for University of Wisconsin-Madison Opera, Trash for Theatre LILA and Shrek the Musical and Goodnight Moon for Children’s Theater of Madison.

David graduated with a B.F.A. from the University of Texas at Austin and has been a member of United Scenic Artists Local 829 since 1997. He currently resides in Houston.
